Brighton and Hove has the biggest gay community outside London, estimated at around 35,000 and has been a haven for gay people for more than 100 years, with regular visitors including the gay icons, Noel Coward and Ivor Novello. A national census in 2001, revealed that Brighton had the largest number of same sex households in the UK and consequently, it has been described by some as the San Francisco of Britain. It is probably safe to say, that Brighton is the place where many
Londoners eventually gravitate, to avoid the hedonism of city life. The gay scene in Brighton is centred in the gay village, located mainly in the Kemptown area, often referred to as ‘Camptown’. Here you will find most of the gay bars, clubs, restaurants and other businesses.
With over 100 licensed premises in the village centre alone, Brighton’s gay village surely boasts some of the best nightlife in the UK. From traditional pubs to trendy wine bars, chilled-out café bars to members-only clubs. In addition to the gay venues there are a number of straight clubs, which hold gay nights such as Wild Fruit at Creation, the city's longest running gay dance extravaganza. The biggest gay club in Brighton is Club Revenge, which is very popular with tourists and locals alike.
The city boasts a number of gay saunas, of which the Oasis Sauna is probably the largest and most popular. It also has some wonderful beaches such as the official nudist beach, which is a 15 minute walk from the village and is very popular with the gay crowd. At Telscombe Cliffs, there is an unofficial nudist beach/cruising area. Access is via a footpath close to the Badgers Watch Pub but be warned, swimming here can be dangerous due to the strong current and rocks.
The biggest annual gay event in the city is Brighton Pride. It has the reputation for being one of the biggest and best in Britain and is held over several days in August, throughout the city, culminating in a huge party in Preston Park in Kemptown.
