exciting destination that is popular with those from both the gay and straight scenes alike. The area is within easy walking distance of central business district of Sydney and runs along Oxford Street from the south-east corner of Hyde Park to the fashionable and upmarket area of Paddington. The neighbouring areas of Darlinghurst, Surry Hills and Paddington all have great direct access to Oxford Street’s gay and lesbian venues as well as being close to the rest of the city’s main sites such as the Sydney Opera House, the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Botanical Gardens. Another notable and vibrant gay area which is particularly popular with the lesbian community is the trendy cafe-strip suburb of Newtown in the Inner West area of Sydney. The surrounding accommodation suburbs of Erskineville, Enmore, Glebe, Leichardt and Annandale are also all gay-friendly communities, close to Newtown and only a short bus or train ride to the city centre. If you are looking to be close to the beach North Bondi has a strong gay vibe.
Sydney’s LGBT scene is world-renowned for its annual Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras, which happens once a year in February and March. The festival is hugely popular and draws in thousands of people from across Australia and overseas each year. It boasts events such as the Harbour Party in Sydney’s picturesque Botanical Gardens, overlooking Sydney Opera House; the Bondi Drag Races, a raucous collection of tongue-in-cheek beach-based sporting events on the iconic sands of the world famous Bondi Beach; and Fair Day, which sees as many as 70,000 people converge on Sydney’s Victoria Park for a day of food and drink and browsing the many stalls on offer. The main event however is the Mardi Gras Parade and Party which sees a wild and outrageous procession of LGBT party people, and floats, walk and dance its way down Oxford Street and through the city. It is definitely a spectacle worth being in town for!
If you can’t make it to Sydney for the Mardi Gras don’t worry – for the rest of the year Sydney can boast being one of the most naturally beautiful settings for a city in the world. Sydney harbour abounds in stunning coves, bays, cliffs and beaches to explore at your leisure, by ferry, by boat or on foot. Not to mention the many shops, art galleries, museums, restaurants and bars spread throughout the CBD and its surrounds. You certainly won’t run out of things to do on a break in Sydney!
