New York gay accommodation and travel guide

statlibpic

Gay Homestays accommodation network lists gay and lesbian guest house, bed and breakfast, tourist apartment and private gay accommodation in New York, USA.

New York, the city that never sleeps, The Big Apple – We have all heard these clichés but New York is truly one of the world’s greatest gay destinations.

Greenwich Village and specifically Christopher Street marks the historic epicentre of the gay community in New York. This was the place of the infamous gay Stonewall Riots of 1969  and on the intersection of Seventh Avenue and Christopher Street there is a small park, which commemorates the event. Nearby are a number of well-known gay establishments:the Duplex

Piano Bar & Cabaret - a relaxed, unpretentious New York gay bar with drag queens and friendly staff, and The Stonewall Inn- the historic gay bar where the gay rights movement began.

Nowadays gay life is dotted all around the city of New York and is not only located in Manhattan. Chelsea in Lower Manhattan offers a wide selection of trendy bars, clubs and restaurants which are concentrated around Eighth Avenue; the Lower East Side and East Village has the reputation of being bohemian and has a plethora of trendy gay bars.  Hell’s Kitchen is situated on the west side of Midtown Manhattan, it has a gritty, chic, character that has become popular with the gay community, aspiring professionals and jobbing actors wanting to be near to the action or close to Broadway.  More recently Brooklyn has emerged as a new up and coming gay scene with the Williamsburg being at the centre. The Metropolitan was Williamsburg's first gay bar, and it's now a staple for New York City's gay community boasting two floors and an enormous backyard and the R Bar, which gets raucous on Tuesday and Sunday nights, is another popular haunt.

New York City Gay Pride is a pretty mind-blowing experience, with a huge parade which snakes down 5th Avenue, before turning off into the Village and filtering through the smaller, quieter streets. The biggest event of the Gay Pride calendar is undoubtedly the Dance on the Pier, a spectacular outdoor dance event.

New York City comprises five distinctive boroughs with their own personalities: The aptly named Queens, Brooklyn, Manhattan the Bronx and Staten Island.  To get a true flavour of New York it is worth visiting as many districts as you can.

There is no shortage of things to do in this 24/7 metropolis; boredom is simply not an option. Take a walk around the impressive Central Park, visit the amazing Museum of Metropolitan Art or the newly opened Ground Zero, take a boat trip out to the Statue of Liberty and Staten Island, or take the elevator to the top of the Empire State building – there is, almost, too much to do and see but you are guaranteed to have fun trying to do just that.
